Hollywood Bowl FY earnings grow, Canada clears Anglo American-Teck merger

The FTSE 100 was expected to open 30.4 points lower ahead of the bell on Tuesday after wrapping up the previous session 1.06% higher at 9,751.31.

Hollywood Bowl reported a rise in annual core earnings despite a challenging backdrop for indoor leisure as customers splashed out on food and drink at its tenpin centres. Underlying earnings for the year ended 30 September rose 4.2% to £91.2m. Despite the cost of living crisis the company said there was still "robust demand for multi-generational affordable leisure in UK and Canada".

Multinational energy company Centrica announced on Tuesday that its Spirit Energy joint venture has sold its remaining 15% interest in the Cygnus gas field, and all other producing assets in the Greater Markham Area and Southern North Sea. Centrica said Spirit Energy, jointly owned and operated with Stadtwerke München, disposed of its stake to Serica Energy for approximately £98m, made up of a headline consideration of £57m and the transfer of £41m of decommissioning liabilities. Centrica's 69% share of headline consideration was expected to be £39m.

The Canadian government has given the green light for Anglo American's $50bn merger with Vancouver-based copper and zinc miner Teck Resources. Canada's Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly granted regulatory approval for the merger of equals, under the condition that the combined group will spend at least CAD $4.5bn (£2.5bn) in Canada within five years. The approval follows the vast majority of shareholders endorsing the proposed tie-up last week

Nissan has started the production of its latest electric car in Sunderland, a crucial step in the UK automotive industry's transition away from petrol and diesel. The Japanese manufacturer will launch the third generation of the Leaf on Tuesday, which was the first mass-market battery electric car to be built in the UK. Nissan has made 282,704 Leaf models at the north-east England plant so far. - Guardian

Ministers are expected to back calls to regulate England's funeral industry for the first time, after a series of scandals over the handling of remains. Bereaved families have called for a new investigatory body and rules governing professional qualifications after an official inquiry declared the sector an "unregulated free for all". - Guardian

Britain's immigration rules make it easier for academics on modest salaries to work in the country than for wealth creators such as founders, scientists and entrepreneurs, a think tank has found. The Centre for British Progress warned that growth-starved Britain risks squandering a golden opportunity just as Donald Trump has started turning away highly-skilled and entrepreneurial foreigners. - Telegraph

Morrisons has become the first UK supermarket to delay its net zero targets in a setback for Ed Miliband's clean power ambitions. The Bradford-based grocer said it was now aiming to hit the milestone by 2050, having previously set a deadline of 2035. It said the 15-year delay was necessary because its new green targets include emissions across its entire supply chain - not just from its stores as before. - Telegraph

Ford is to pull back from electric cars in a retrenchment that will deliver a blow of almost $20bn to the American manufacturer amid hostility to green vehicles from President Trump. The Michigan-based company said on Monday it would embark on a wide-ranging overhaul of its electric vehicle business that will include scrapping some models. - The Times



US CLOSE

Major indices closed lower on Monday as AI stocks weighed on sentiment and market participants braced for a number of major US economic reports scheduled for release this week.

At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.09% at 48,416.65, while the S&P 500 shed 0.16% to 6,816.57 and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 0.59% weaker at 23,057.41.
