US open: Stocks mixed as investors weigh ceasefire extension, Iran talks

By Iain Gilbert

Date: Friday 24 Apr 2026

(Sharecast News) - Wall Street trading got off to a mixed start on Friday after Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to extend their ceasefire by a further three weeks, with the US set to work with Beirut to help it protect itself from Hezbollah.
As of 1520 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.37% at 49,126.23, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.22% to 7,123.96, and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.54% firmer at 24,569.96.

The Dow opened 184.09 points lower on Friday, extending losses recorded in the previous session.

Friday's primary focus looked set to be news that Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi was expected to arrive in Islamabad on Friday evening, with US‑Iran negotiations likely to take place, according to MSNOW, which cited a Pakistani government official.

Market participants were continuing to monitor developments in the Middle East early amid a fragile truce between the US-Israel alliance and Iran, with the conflict increasingly centred on the Strait of Hormuz, where both sides now claim to have seized commercial vessels.

On the macro front, the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index was upwardly revised to 49.8 in April, up from an initial estimate of 47.6. However, despite the modest improvement, April's print remained the weakest reading on record, reflecting the cost of the US and Israel's conflict with Iran on consumer morale.

In the corporate space, semiconductor manufacturer Intel surged in early action after posting stronger‑than‑expected first‑quarter revenues and issuing an upbeat outlook, with the company highlighting a "fundamental" shift driven by its turnaround efforts and rising AI demand. Intel reported Q1 revenues of $13.6bn, up 7% year‑on‑year and ahead of the $12.4bn expected by analysts. For the current quarter, Intel projected revenue of $13.8bn to $14.8bn, also above market forecasts.
