Home Retail saw shares sink on Thursday after the first-quarter underlying growth figures at its Argos chain missed forecasts. Like-for-like (LFL) sales increased by just 1.9 per cent in the 13 weeks to June 1st, well below the 3.0 per cent expected by analysts. LFL growth at the smaller Homebase division was a more subdued 1.2 per cent but in line with estimates.

Water group Severn Trent dropped sharply on Wednesday after the consortium of foreign investors that had bid for the company withdrew its offer last night. LongRiver, after having had its earlier proposals rejected by Severn Trent, said that it would not put forward a further offer "in the absence of meaningful engagement" with the utility's board.

A spokesman from the consortium responded by saying that it would not make a further proposal for Severn Trent if the board does not engage in talks.
